How Man Utd player Daniel James has surprised Gary Neville

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has opened up on how Daniel James' goalscoring form has surprised him.

James joined United from Swansea in the summer, in a deal worth around £15million, putting pen-to-paper on a five-year deal with the option of an additional year.

And so far this season, the 21-year-old has been one of his side's standout stars, scoring three times.

Neville, speaking ahead of his United's clash with West Ham, revealed how the quality of the Welshman's finishing has left him surprised.

“I think the goalscoring bit has surprised me," the former full-back told Sky Sports.

"I expected him to be lively and counter-attack wise, I think he fits with how Manchester United have historically always been able to counter-attack well and certainly how Ole wants to take this team forward.

“The quality of his finishing to be fair is something that has surprised me., I didn’t think that he would be as good in front of goal. Full-backs now will start to latch onto him a little bit and will have to stop him cutting inside onto his right foot.

“There are too many full-backs allowing him to cut back inside to get that yard, they can’t allow that, there’s been too many examples of it.

“He’s now an unknown quality but there’s a little bit of new in him that ultimately people have been caught out by.”
