How Man City legend Vincent Kompany convinced Anderlecht to hire him as manager

Anderlecht technical director Frank Arnesen has revealed that Vincent Kompany convinced the club to put him in charge following a six-hour meeting and says the Man City captain will bring them 'not one step ahead, [but] maybe three, four steps ahead.'

Kompany will leave Manchester after an 11-year stay which has seen him become a City icon, thanks to his fearless defending, penchant for scoring vital, title winning goals and his genuine love for the city.

The Belgian was enjoying somewhat of a renaissance in form towards the end of the past season as he played a pivotal role in the run in that saw City clinch a unprecedented domestic treble.

As a result it came as a shock when he announced that he would leave the club this season to be player-manager of his hometown club and Arnesen has revealed how he earned the job.

"We went to City and we had a meeting with [Kompany] for six hours," Arnesen told Sky Sports News. "I was really amazed and when we went home after this meeting I fully agreed.

"There are so many ups and so few downs. Anderlecht is on the floor at the moment. That is why I came in four months ago. Vincent as a player will not bring us one step ahead, [but] maybe three, four steps ahead. We have no leaders.

"Everything football-wise is fantastic [with his appointment]. I was very impressed with his explanation about the philosophy, how we will do and what he is doing.

"I said I am in and then Vincent said I will do it about four weeks ago."

Kompany will return to the club he joined as a teenager in 2001 and left for German side Hamburg in 2006, before arriving at City just two years late where he would go onto have unimaginable sucsses.

He returns to a club in turmoil after a disastrous season that saw them fail to qualify for any European competition for the first time in 56 years.
