How Man City could line up with summer transfer target Bruno Fernandes

Not even Sergio Aguero or Raheem Sterling have a better scoring record this season than Bruno Fernandes.

With 31 goals and 17 assists in 50 appearances for Sporting this season, it's no wonder Manchester City continue to pursue one of Portugal's most exciting talents.

City are closing in on Fernandes, 24, and, if everything goes to plan, should see him join the wealth of attacking talent in the midfield at the Etihad.

Pep Guardiola's side are also expected to be in the market for a defensive midfielder to replace Fernandinho this summer, but Ilkay Gundogan has been linked with a move away in a possible re-shuffle of Pep Guardiola's squad.

David Silva's role may be limited as he turns 34 next season, with Fernandes fitting the profile of a perfect replacement.

But how would he fit in a starting XI with so many options?

Option One

City beat Leicester last night with Phil Foden starting alongside David Silva, with Kevin de Bruyne and Fernandinho injured. Fernandes would presumably take Foden's place in that side, despite big things predicted for the England U21 international.

Option Two:

Moving forward, and Fernandes would probably slot in alongside De Bruyne in City's strongest side on paper. That would force Bernardo Silva out wide with Leroy Sane missing out, but Fernandes' Portugese international teammate has become un-droppable this season.

If City do find a Fernandinho replacement, Guardiola would surely rotate the defensive midfield position, with De Bruyne also capable of dropping back.

Option Three:

Like Bernardo, Fernandes has the qualities to operate from the wing, but this formation again excludes Sane. It does, however, allow Bernardo and De Bruyne to resume their promising partnership in the centre of midfield.
