How Luke Ayling and Ezgjan Alioski silenced their critics in March to become Leeds United's key men

Leeds United had a very successful March with four wins from five matches and second place in the Championship to their name and three players stood out as the key men for one statistical site.

Luke Ayling, Ezgjan Alioski and Pablo Hernandez have all been named in Whoscored.com’s best XI for March as the Whites secured 12 points from 15 to move second in the table.

Wins over West Bromwich Albion, Bristol City, Reading and Millwall saw Marcelo Bielsa’s side climb from third to above Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United, despite losing 1-0 to the Blades at Elland Road.

After a strong string of results, which saw the Whites claim three clean sheets, United have seen Messrs Ayling, Alioski and Hernandez all included in the site's monthly side.

Ayling has produced an incredible four assists across the five matches, plus a goal against Millwall, while Alioski scored in the 4-0 win over West Brom and looked especially dynamic at Reading.

West Brom’s Sam Johnstone takes the spot between the sticks, with Ayling and Alioski lining up on either side of the defence, with Jack O’Connell and Aaron Webster at the heart of the backline.

Hernandez lines up on the right of a four-man midfield, after scoring five times across three games in March.

The majestic Spaniard has dragged United back into the promotion race with a string of eye-catching performances, not to mention 11 assists for the season, the joint-highest in the league.

Aston Villa duo John McGinn and Tammy Abraham also feature, alongside Chris Brunt, Said Benrahma and Lukas Jutkiewicz, who joins city rival Abraham up front.

Notable absentees include Jack Grealish, whose return from injury has been the catalyst for Villa’s five-game winning run, which has catapulted them up to sixth in the standings.

After scoring three times, Patrick Bamford also misses out on a spot in attack, despite the fact Jutkiewicz only netted once in the entirety of March.

The Whites will be hoping for another impressive month on the field as they play six of their remaining seven fixtures in April, bidding for automatic promotion.
