How long will the new household mixing restrictions in Leeds last?

Leeds Council are expecting restrictions on household mixing to be announced for the city.

They told journalists in a press conference this afternoon they anticipate the government will be making the announcement this afternoon.

The new restrictions are expected to ban households in Leeds mixing with one another.

Leeds City Council's chief executive Tom Riordan told the conference they expect some exemptions will be announced, including those in social bubbles and those with childcare requirements.

But, he said: "Principally the message is no household mixing in Leeds from midnight tonight is what we expect to be announced later today".

Mr Riordan has said these new restrictions will be something that the council need the city of Leeds to get behind.

"It looks like we are in the middle of the second wave so we do support these household restrictions being brought in at this stage and this is something that we really need the city to get behind," he said.

But the restrictions could be set to last a very long time and, while they will be reviewed each week, if residents do not obey them, it is likely to "last throughout the winter" and possibly "into March or April".

Mr Riordan said the Council knows from the experience of watching the local lockdowns in Leicester, Greater Manchester and West Yorkshire that they are not quickly lifted.

"But we would expect them to be reviewed on a weekly basis," he said.

Victoria Eaton, the council's director of public health, said the council have not had any "formal confirmation" on a time limit for the new restrictions.

However, she said that there were talks about them "potentially" being in place until March or early April next year.

"They will be in place for as long as they are needed," she said.

The council was asked at the conference what this would mean for families at Christmas and whether or not full compliance was expected.

"We don't know yet, is the honest answer," said Mr Riordan.

He added: "We don't know how long these restrictions are going to last this is just what we are expecting from government at the moment."

However, he did say that he was sure the people of Leeds would do "everything they possibly can" to ensure that people have a Christmas they can "remember fondly".
