How long will my passport need to be valid for when I travel? Breakdown by country

The air-travel industry is again booming following the removal of almost every Covid pandemic measure. Demand for flights has seen most airports expand routes, as passenger numbers soar close to ten-times that of this time last year.

Five million British holidaymakers are expected to take-off this summer, many of them heading overseas for the first time in two years.

However, in the intervening months, much has changed at airports. From hour long security queues due to a shortage of Border Force officers, to the UK's removal from free-movement legislation - travellers cannot jet-off as effortlessly as before.

Some airports are now recommending tourists arrive 2.5 hours before your gate closes to avoid missing your flight due to enormous queues, while some have even been turned away due to their passport being too close to expiry.

European Union nations now state that your passport needs to still be within 10 years of the issue date, regardless if you have months left before its stated expiry date.

Passport expiry requirements

The Foreign Office has issued an update for 33 countries to make it easier for Brits after travel rules changed due to Brexit.

Here are all the passport expiry requirements you need to know.

Three months

The majority of EU countries only require travellers from the UK to have at least three months left before expiry on the day of travel, according to HM Passport Office. These countries include:

  • Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Cyprus (six months for Northern Cyprus) and Czech Republic
  • Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland and Italy
  • Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland and Portugal
  • Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden

Six months

The following nations require travellers to have at least six months of validity left on passports:

  • China, Egypt, India, Thailand and Turkey

For those travelling to South Africa, it is recommended that you have at least six months on your passport before it expires. Though current rules only state at least 30 days from the date of exit.

Duration of stay

The following countries only require travellers to have a valid passport for the duration of their stay in the nation:

  • Australia, Barbados, Japan, Mexico, USA

One month

New Zealand requires arrivals in the country to have at least one month of validity left, on the date of their exit and return to the UK.
