He is expected to strike an upbeat tone as he talks up building a "stronger economy of the future" and signalling a path forward for the UK after the difficulties caused by the pandemic.

How long will the speech go on for?

The budget speech will be delivered from 12.30pm on Wednesday. It is not known exactly how long the speech will go on for, but judging by previous recent speeches it is likely that the speech will last for between one and two hours.

Budget speeches have varied in length over the years. The longest continuous budget speech was delivered by William Ewart Gladstone on April 18, 1853 and lasted 4 hours and 45 minutes. The shortest was given by Benjamin Disraeli in 1867 and lasted 45 minutes.
