How long does it take to get my PCR test result?

Testing for coronavirus is part of the national approach to containing its spread.

Free lateral flow test kits have been available for anyone without symptoms since April in Scotland, with people encouraged to test themselves twice weekly.

But Scots still have to get a positive test confirmed by NHS with a PCR test at a drop in centre, or drive-thru clinic.

If you have symptoms, or a positive lateral flow test, you must get a PCR.

Here's how:

When should you have a PCR test?

PCR - Polymerase Chain Reaction - tests are necessary for anyone who has one of three key Covid-19 symptoms.

These are a high temperature or fever, a new continuous cough or a loss of or change in sense of smell or taste.

Here, a new continuous cough means a more severe one then usual, lasting longer than an hour or three or more episodes in 24 hours.

You may also have to get a PCR test under certain circumstances such as being identified as a close contact or asked by a workplace.

What does it involve?

The tests can either be carried out at home or at any coronavirus testing centres which have been set up throughout Scotland.

They involve a throat or nose swab which is then processed in a lab and the results are normally sent out within 48 hours.

Can you repeat a PCR test?

Repeating a PCR test within 90 days of a positive result is not recommended unless you develop new symptoms.

This is because there may be fragments of coronavirus left giving you a positive result even though you're no longer infectious.

How can you book one?

To book a PCR test please visit the NHS Inform website.

If you have coronavirus symptoms you must self-isolate before your test and while waiting for your results.

How long do PCR test results take?

Normally results are sent to you via text within 24hours.
