Following this week’s update on Covid-19 measures in Ireland, the question of when all restrictions can be done away with continues to be asked.
Ireland is among a number of countries in Europe and beyond that are currently adjusting their reopening plans as the Delta variant remains a real threat.
Among the newest changes here is the postponement of indoor dining and events, as well as group training, exercise and dance.
While other restrictions like outdoor events, wedding guest numbers and indoor visitors for the vaccinated and recently recovered are still set to go ahead on July 5, a date for the reopening for the rest remains a relative mystery at this point.
Although the Government has said it is determined to reopen soon and safely, plans hang in the balance as new variants raise their heads and new issues stem from spikes in cases around the country.
Earlier today, the World Health Organisation (WHO) issued a widespread warning around the variant that was first detected in India, after a considerable rise in cases throughout Europe.
At a press conference today, WHO's regional director for Europe Hans Kluge said that unless countries remain strict in their processes of reopening, we could be in for a fourth wave of Covid-19.
"Last week, the number of cases rose by 10%, driven by increased mixing, travel, gatherings, and easing of social restrictions," he said.
"There will be a new wave in the WHO European Region unless we remain disciplined.”
As it stands, an updated easing on July 5 and 19 will go-ahead for a number of areas in society.
This includes the long-awaited return of international travel in line with the implementation of the EU Digital Green Certificate, controlled outdoor events, and an increased number of mourners allowed to attend funerals.
However, beyond what is currently listed, such as a return to offices around the country as well as indoor services and events have yet to be confirmed.
On July 19, health officials will reveal a plan for the return of such services strictly for those who are vaccinated, however, the new date for a reopening has yet to be confirmed.
The latest reports suggest that the Government is considering rapid antigen tests as a possible way of getting everyone back inside bars and restaurants at the soonest possible point.
