How Liverpool will transform as shops are bulldozed and a city centre square is built over

Liverpool's skyline has transformed over the past few years, and those changes are set to continue after city councillors approved a raft of new developments that could continue the city's evolution.

The council's planning committee approved new housing, hotels and school facilities for the city in a mammoth meeting this morning.

Here are the key decisions - and what they will mean.

The TJ Hughes is set to be torn down - and replaced with something very different

The 245 apartments, which will be for rent, will be accompanied by a gym, an underground car park and shops on the ground floor.

A forgotten corner of the city centre could be transformed

One of the plans approved by councillors today will see an empty site wedged between Renshaw Street and Roscoe Street completely transformed by two massive new buildings.

Councillors had already approved plans for student flats on the site around Oldham Place in 2016.

The updated plans that got the green light today will also see a hotel built, with student flats going up on land right behind it.

The buildings will span Back Renshaw Street, Oldham Place and Benson Street, with the student flats including a gym, a cinema, a games area and a multi-media lounge.

A square that's a magnet for crime and drugs is being built over

Councillors also approved plans that will see a city centre square built on after claims it currently attracts crime and anti-social behaviour.

Arthouse Hotel, owned by Signature Living , is set to be extended out on to the square in front of it.

The company, which owns the square off Seel Street, says its design has left blind spots where problems with drugs and vandalism can become commonplace.

And council documents show that despite the square being built as part of a push to revitalise the area 20 years ago, later development and the lack of improvements to the public space means it isn't used as intended.

The extension will see the Arthouse Hotel almost double in size to 71 rooms, with the company promising 60 new jobs as a result.

And a top rated Liverpool school is set to expand - and create lots more places

Councillors also approved plans to build an extension at one of Liverpool's top-rated schools in a move that could increase how many students can attend.

Belvedere Academy in Princes Park , which was rated 'outstanding' by Ofsted in its last two inspections, currently gets 10 applications for every place it has available.

Now the all girls school has planning permission to build a new two storey block to provide four new classrooms.

The extra space means 125 new places could be created for years seven to 11, with another 40 created in the sixth form.

Council officers confirmed today those pupil increases will take place over a number of years.
