How Liverpool star Rhian Brewster could dictate Swansea City's January transfer window and the contingency plans in place

Swansea City have a fight on their hands when it comes to the battle to secure a loan deal for Liverpool's Rhian Brewster.

A host of clubs including Leeds United, Sheffield Wednesday, Huddersfield Town and Preston are among those linked with a swoop for the 19-year-old.

But to take Brewster on loan in January.

And it's the England youngster's potential arrival that could heavily dictate what Steve Cooper's side do in the market next month.

as a result of his form this season, while others including Joe Rodon - currently sidelined with an ankle injury - may feature on the radar of clubs in the top flight and beyond.

Trevor Birch previously admitted at a fans' forum that the Swans will have to sell first if they are going to buy players in January.

It's something that head of recruitment Andy Scott recently re-iterated, with head coach Cooper also speaking at length about the contingency plans in place at the club in the event of player sales.

"It would be naive to say someone could go and then we'd be in a panic situation, so there are tentative plans in place (for exits)," said the Swansea boss.

As for Scott, he said last month: “In football you have to be as prepared as you possibly can for every outcome, so having a plan for A, B, C and beyond is vital.

“But we have to cover ourselves if a club comes in for a player.

“We are also aware that we simply cannot waste money here."

Swansea already have four loan players on their books. Freddie Woodman, Aldo Kalulu, Sam Surridge and Ben Wilmot will all spend the duration of the 2019/20 campaign at the Liberty Stadium.

There is of course the possibility of recalls, something Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe alluded to when discussing Surridge in a recent interview.

But while there are no restrictions on the number of loan players Championship clubs can have on their books, there are rules on how many can feature in any given match.

The EFL state that sides in the second tier can have no more than five loan players in a matchday squad.

This of course means that if Swansea acquire the services of Brewster - or anyone else - on loan next month, they will be at full quota.

"We've only got one loan place left because there's four in the matchday squad," Cooper said on the situation.

"If there's a loan that's available and fits business wise then we have to be really selective."

Brewster was an integral figure for Cooper at the Under-17s World Cup two years ago, with the striker netting eight times to finish as the competition's top goalscorer as England's young guns tasted glory.

And it's clear for all to see that Brewster is someone Cooper rates very highly.

Speaking about the English attacker before the clash with West Brom earlier this month, the Swansea boss said: "I know him really well. He’s a good lad and a good player.

"I follow a lot of players’ careers that I’ve worked with, both at club and international level, and he's one that's had a bit of bad luck with injuries, but it’s good to see him back and fit.

"I definitely like him as a player and a person and I wish him well whatever happens, like I do with all of the boys I've worked with."
