How Liverpool's Sadio Mane can eclipse Cristiano Ronaldo and set Champions League history against Porto

Sadio Mane can make history against Porto on Wednesday night.

The Senegalese attacker scored a hat-trick for Liverpool against the Portuguese giants at the Estádio do Dragão in last season’s Champions League last 16 match.

Only Luiz Adriano (vs Bate Borisov) and Cristiano Ronaldo (vs Athletico Madrid) have ever scored more than one hat-trick against an opponent in the Champions League, while no player has ever scored two away from home against one club.

That means Mane can set a new record in Europe's premier competition if he finds the back of the net three times and takes home the match ball when Jurgen Klopp's men take on Porto.

Of course, it is going to be a tall order but given the fine run of form the Reds attacker is in - it is not impossible.

The Senegalese has scored 12 goals in his last 17 games across the Premier League and Champions League having bagged a brace against Bayern Munich, Burnley and Watford while also netting against other tough opposition in the form of Chelsea.

The Reds also head into their quarter-final second-leg match with a 2-0 advantage after goals at Anfield from Naby Keita and Roberto Firmino were coupled with a clean sheet in the first fixture.

That will mean Porto have to come out and attack Liverpool which could play into the visitors hands and leave more open spaces for players like Mane, who is likely to start alongside Firmino and Mohamed Salah at the head of the field, to exploit.
