How Liverpool's Premier League title bid stands to benefit from international fixture schedule

With the international break heading into its final few days, attention is slowly starting to focus towards the resumption of Premier League football.

Nowhere will that be more evident than at Melwood this week as Jurgen Klopp continues to plot his way to Premier League - and perhaps Champions League - glory.

The Liverpool manager will be keeping his fingers crossed that his internationals return unscathed as they play their final matches for their respective countries this week.

Klopp will see his players return in batches across the week, but it generally makes for pleasant reading for the Reds boss who sees his players come back in plenty of time to prepare for the game against Tottenham next week.

Jordan Henderson could feature for Gareth Southgate's England when they travel to Montenegro on Monday evening. The Reds captain was excellent in the Three Lions' 5-0 drubbing of Czech Republic at Wembley on Friday night and may be involved again.

The in-form Sadio Mane will turn out for Senegal on Tuesday as they host Mali, and the 20-goal Reds star has the longest return to Merseyside this week, but will be back to rest and train before Sunday's visit from Spurs.

Liverpool's Brazilian trio Fabinho, Roberto Firmino and Alisson Becker are all part of a Selecao squad that faces the Czech Republic in Prague on Tuesday evening.

With no trip to South America for the Brazilians, a relatively short flight back from east Europe awaits the three Reds players.

Virgil van Dijk and Gini Wijnaldum both started for the Netherlands as they hosted Germany in Euro 2020 qualifier in Amsterdam on Sunday evening, giving the influential Dutch duo plenty of time to recuperate ahead of their return to club duty.

Simon Mignolet and Divock Origi are also part of the Belgium squad that is hosted by Cyprus on Sunday night, with both players on the bench.

Andy Robertson was spared the blushes of being part of a Scotland team that were humbled 3-0 to Kazakhstan last week but the captain started against minnows San Marino on Sunday as they got back to winning ways.

"Obviously I was back in Scotland so I know the fallout from it and how people reacted and you can't question their reaction," he admitted after the defeat in Kazakhstan.

"It's the right way to react after a result like that. We need time to get their trust back.

"A good performance isn't enough to come close to making this week a success but we have nine games to make it right."

Meanwhile Dejan Lovren made his first start since early January as World Cup finalists Croatia met Hungary on Sunday afernoon.

The schedule affords Klopp's players ample time to relax before they make their way back to Melwood ahead of a crucial final few weeks of the Premier League season.

It's marked contrast to previous international breaks where Klopp has been left sweating on the returns of his Brazil internationals, in particular.

In previous years, the Reds have shelled out big fees to ensure the likes of Firmino and Philippe Coutinho make their way back to Merseyside via a private jet.

Klopp has no such worries this time around ahead of the visit from Spurs on March 31.

Preparation for a huge run-in begins at Melwood next week and having his players returning in good time will be a big boost for the Liverpool manager as he aims to bring home a first title for 29 years.
