How Liverpool players really feel about title challenge as Reds turns attentions to Europe

Virgil van Dijk believes a willingness to go “that extra yard” for each other is proving a cornerstone of Liverpool's challenge for honours this season.

The Reds welcome Porto for the first leg of their Virgil van Dijk targets remarkable double with Liverpool - but admits there's no room for error having moved back to the top of the Premier League table.

And Van Dijk, whose outstanding performances have made him favourite for the PFA Player of the Year award, has attempted to pinpoint why Jurgen Klopp's side remain in the hunt for a remarkable trophy double.

“We have so much quality in the team, so much talent, and there's the hard work that we put in every day in training,” he said.

“And during the whole game the strikers keep pressing, keep defending well, midfield keep running and doing everything for the team and playing well when have the ball, working hard for the team and each other.

“You want to go that extra yard for your team-mates and that's something that's very important. It has been shown throughout the whole season.”

Asked if there was a growing feeling this could be Liverpool's time to end their wait for silverware, Van Dijk responded: “Hopefully. That's the only answer I can give you. Everyone is dreaming of it.

“The unlucky bit for us is some other team in the league has been amazing as well. For a neutral Premier League watcher it's a great view, its nice to see two good teams challenging for the title.

“Hopefully it can all be something great at the end of the season. But we can already keep our heads up very high.”

Mohamed Salah ended an eight-game goal drought with a brilliant strike in Friday's 3-1 win at Southampton.

“How has he been since? Fantastic,” added Van Dijk. “He is always lively, is always happy and wants to work hard and give everything for the team.

“That's what Liverpool are all about. Everyone gives everything for the team and the club. He didn't score for a couple of games but the pressure and the talk, it only came from the media.

“He was playing well, he was very important for us. He is still having a fantastic season.”
