How Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp's wife stopped him from becoming Manchester United boss

Jurgen Klopp is a modern day Liverpool icon but he could have been managing their bitter rivals Manchester United now if his wife Ulla hadn't told him not to.

That's the claim of another Reds legend, former European Cup-winning captain Phil Thompson who revealed that Klopp's other half told him not to take up the reins at Old Trafford.

Speaking to Norwegian channel TV 2 , Thompson said: “I interviewed Klopp for Sky, and I asked if he and Liverpool were created for each other. He looked at me and asked why.

“Then Klopp told me he could have taken over Manchester United, but his wife said it wasn’t right.

“When Liverpool arrived, his wife said it was right. There is something strange there. It is as if he’s created for Liverpool.”

Kirkby-born Thompson won seven League Championships, an FA Cup, two League Cups, three European Cups, two UEFA Cups and one European Super Cup during a trophy-laden spell at Anfield.

However, despite the current team still having to wait for their first League Championship – they currently enjoy an eight point lead at the top of the Premier League – Thompson claims they are already one of the Reds greatest sides.

He added: “This is one of the best Liverpool teams in the club’s history.

“In my time we always lost three to four games [at this stage of the season], but this team leads [reigning champions Manchester City] by nine points and lost only one game last season.

“This season they have beaten everyone, except for a draw at Old Trafford. They are doing something great.”
