How Liverpool looked on the first Saturday under Tier 3 restrictions

Today is the first Saturday since Liverpool entered Tier 3 restrictions to curb the spread of rising coronavirus infection rates.

The tougher restrictions for the region mean bars and restaurants were forced to close just hours before New Year's Eve, with many slamming the government for the last minute decision.

Under the new rules, non-essential shops are allowed to remain open, but people are advised against travelling in or out of the area to prevent further transmission of the virus.

Shoppers were keen to head out into the city centre on Saturday, to support shops on the high street and keep hold of some normality in the new year.

People were pictured with Primark and River Island bags on Church Street, while others queued outside CEX.

Signs reminded people of the very high coronavirus alert level in the city, with stores continuing to limit the number of people allowed inside at one time.

However, the city centre was comparatively quieter than it has been on previous years, with hospitality venues once again being forced to close.

Mathew Street and the streets surrounding Concert Square remained eerily quiet and deserted as the city's nightlife continues to grapple with coronavirus restrictions and the uncertainty of the months ahead.

Elsewhere in the region, long lines of people were pictured queuing outside coronavirus testing centres.

Images taken by the ECHO showed queues outside a testing centre in New Brighton, with many keen to get tested on the first weekend of the New Year.

Police are reminding people not to travel to Merseyside unless they have good reason to do so, with officers from the British Transport Police stopping to speak to passengers at Lime Street this afternoon.

BTP tweeted on Saturday: "The #LiverpoolOSU are assisting us with meeting in trains, ensuring that passengers are travelling to and from Liverpool with good reason.

"If you’re not meant to be in Merseyside, please don’t be. #StayHome."

Drivers were also pulled over by police before entering the Mersey tunnels today to check they are abiding by the latest coronavirus restrictions.

Mersey Tunnels Police officers are carrying out compliance checks at the Wirral entrances to the Mersey tunnels, with a small number of motorists being randomly pulled over by officers.

Officers from Knowsley Police also had officers patrolling retail areas on Friday, to target those who had travelled here to shop.
