How Liverpool could line up vs Barcelona with Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino both out

Maybe it is fitting that the week which could end up being the most monumental of Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool career has more than a hint of the start of it.

It was October 2015 when Klopp took over a Liverpool squad which featured Daniel Sturridge, Divock Origi and James Milner as three of his forward-thinking options, and all three might be needed from the start against Barcelona on Tuesday.

Because if coming from 3-0 down against the Catalans had already represented climbing Everest, then coming from 3-0 down against the Catalans without Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino is surely climbing Everest without any shoes on. In the dark. And it's raining.

But Liverpool have done this sort of thing before and so on they go, and as Klopp looks around the attacking ranks left at his disposal he isn't exactly short of quality.

How will the side look on Tuesday night though?

Here are some options.

1. Mane in the middle

When Firmino was injured for the 5-0 win over Watford in late February, Klopp moved Sadio Mane into the centre of the attack and started Origi off the left, where he's been impressing in cameos off the bench.

The response was a brace inside 20 minutes for the Senegalese and second half goal for Origi, all of which would be just lovely on Tuesday.

2. Can Sturridge start again?

Saturday was the first time Sturridge has played 90 minutes for Liverpool since the beginning of December, so is it too much to ask him to go again?

After making surprise starts against Huddersfield and Newcastle in the title run-in there's no doubt that Klopp will want him on the pitch at some point, but he might be better suited coming off the bench.

If he did start though, then you expect Mane to move to the right and Xherdan Shaqiri to drop out.

3. Shaqiri returns in a 4-2-3-1

Shaqiri could start in this side (https://www.buildlineup.com/)

One of the reasons why Shaqiri has been seen less and less in the second half of the season is because Klopp has moved away from the 4-2-3-1 formation often seen in the first half of the campaign.

He trusted the Swiss implicitly on the right hand side of that, and so something like this could work, with Mane through the middle and Milner brought in to supplement the attack in the absence of the injured Naby Keita.
