How Liverpool city centre looked the weekend before tier review

People across Liverpool have been out doing their Christmas shopping and going out for meals on one of the last weekend's before Christmas.

It's eleven days since Liverpool went into Tier 2 after the second national lockdown was lifted and the country reverted to a tiered system of restrictions.

The government's tier levels are due to be reviewed on Wednesday, December 16, and people have been out enjoying themselves before the government looks again at which areas are in which tiers.

There were huge queues outside many city centre stores including H&M, Debenhams and TK Max on Saturday, as shoppers picked up some last minute gifts and hoped to bag themselves a bargain.

People appeared to be abiding by social distancing as they waited outside stores which currently have restrictions on the number of people they are allowed to let in at any one time.

Shoppers stopped to watch street entertainers including one man juggling on a unicycle, while others went for a coffee on the high street.

Bold Street was also bustling with shoppers and people stopping off for lunch with their families.

It was a similar story in Liverpool ONE where people were enjoying the Christmas lights and grabbing some last minute shopping.

The streets were still filled with people on Sunday despite the rain, as shoppers continued to look for bargains.

The city's Christmas tree on Church Street looked stunning as people stopped off at restaurants and hospitality venues with their shopping bags.

Sadly many venues on Matthew Street including The Grapes and the Cavern Club currently remain closed due to the Tier 2 restrictions.

Under the Tier 2 rules you can still visit a pub or bar if it is operating as a restaurant too, providing that you order a ‘substantial’ meal alongside any alcoholic drinks.

There is still a ban on mixing indoors with anyone from another household unless they are part of your support bubble in Tier 2, but you are able to meet others in outdoor settings such as a private garden or a park as long as the group is no larger than six

The new rules also mean hospitality venues must close at 11pm, with last orders at 10pm, so there’s no wonder the city centre was so busy early in the day.
