How Liverpool city centre looked at the start of lockdown compared to now

Until yesterday, pubs, restaurants and cafes across Liverpool were closed for 15 weeks in a desperate bid to stop the spread of coronavirus.

Back on March 20, Prime Minister Boris Johnson ordered people to stop going to such places and the following week the nation was placed on lockdown.

Like everywhere else, Liverpool stood eerily quiet.

For more than three months, venues have either remained completely closed or reinvented themselves offering takeaway and collection services in order to stay afloat.

But for many weeks Liverpool city centre was completely different at night. Gone were the crowds in Concert Square, the hen parties in Mathew Street, the people waiting for taxis by the Bombed Out Church.

But last night that all changed again, as pubs, restaurants and many more businesses were allowed to reopen after the lockdown rules were eased.

After a quiet start to the day, the city centre began bustling from around 3pm and by evening the party had really started.

Concert Square, which has been sectioned off with fencing to ensure people stick to social distancing rules, was full with people sat round tables by 4pm.

People were also seen enjoying meals outside restaurants on Castle Street, Bold Street and at the Albert Dock.

There was a buzz in the city again and it’s one we’ve not seen for quite some time.

We’ve taken a look back at how Liverpool looked at the start of lockdown, and how it was last night, to see just how things have changed.
