How Liverpool can line up against Leeds United after FIFA triple ban imposed

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has grown accustomed to having to deal with the fall-out from an international break.

But even someone of his experience won't have seen anything quite like what is transpiring at present.

The news FIFA, at the request of the Brazilian FA, are imposing the five-day rule on Alisson Becker, Fabinho and Roberto Firmino means the trio won't be available for Sunday's Premier League trip to Leeds United.

Liverpool, who refused to release the players for international duty last week due to coronavirus quarantine restrictions, will contest the decision. As will Leeds, who will be without key forward Raphinha.

For now, though, the Brazilians won't be able to play at Elland Road. So how will that impact on Klopp's selection?

Kelleher comes in

The most obvious issue is between the sticks where Alisson is the undisputed number one.

Caoimhin Kelleher has edged ahead of Adrian as second in the pecking order, and will be on standby to make only his third Premier League appearance.

Virgil van Dijk shrugged off fears of any lingering injury after hurting his ankle in Holland's World Cup qualifying win over Turkey on Tuesday, while fellow centre-backs Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate weren't called up for international duty.

Kostas Tsimikas could come in for Andy Robertson at left-back, who has played four games in 11 days since being sidelined with a minor ankle ligament issue.

Right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold has been with England but Neco Williams withdrew from the Wales squad through injury.

Henderson switch

Liverpool have plenty of choice to make up for the absence of Fabinho in defensive midfield, with Jordan Henderson - who featured there against Burnley - the most likely to fill the role with James Milner having missed the last two games through injury.

The other two spots in the engine room are very much up for grabs.

Naby Keita - safely back from Guinea - and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have both started games this season, while Thiago Alcantara is champing at the bit having been restricted to two substitute outings and not being involved with Spain this week.

Harvey Elliott returned home early from his first England under-21 call-up with a minor issue but hasn't been ruled out for the weekend, while fellow youngster Curtis Jones is another option.

Jota returns

Firmino would in any case have been unlikely to feature against Leeds as he recovers from the hamstring problem that forced him off early against Chelsea.

Diogo Jota, who had started the first two games of the season and replaced the Brazilian against the Londoners, is the obvious man to come in and join Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane in the attack.

Takumi Minamino is a major doubt after sustaining an injury while with Japan, although Divock Origi is expected to be available.
