How Leeds United's summer spending spree historically compares against newly-promoted clubs

It’s been a busy transfer window for Victor Orta and his team at Elland Road.

Leeds United have made 11 signings so far this summer, worth a reported £89m, and look set to break the £100m mark any time now.

United opened things up with the permanent transfers of Helder Costa (£16m) and Illan Meslier (£5m), as well as extending the loan of Jack Harrison for another year.

Harrison was followed by Joe Gelhardt (£1.5m), Charlie Allen (undisclosed), Cody Drameh (undisclosed), and Sam Greenwood (also undisclosed but believed to be seven figures).

The club then smashed their transfer record by signing Rodrigo from Valencia for £30m.

Robin Koch came next for £12.5m, followed by Crysencio Summerville for £900k and finally Diego Llorente for £23m.

Only one newly promoted club has ever spent more than that - Aston Villa in 2019/20.

The Midlands club spent a reported £133m on new players when they were promoted last season.

That smashed the previous record, set at £84m by Fulham in 2018/19.

The top 10 transfer spending sprees for newly promoted sides all took place within the last decade, as you’d expect.

The highest “old” transfer spend was by Roy Keane’s Sunderland in 2007/08.

The Black Cats spent a reported £40million that season. That would be around £56million today when adjusted for inflation.

Another stand out amount from yesteryear is the £32million that Fulham spent in 2001/02 which would be worth £51million today.
