How Leeds United proved BBC pundits wrong

With the lid fully closed on another enthralling season of domestic football, it's fair to say Leeds United's promotion near-miss will likely continue to sting for a long time.

With Marcelo Bielsa reaffirming his allegiance to the club and set to take them forward in 2019/20, hopes remain high the Whites can take one extra step to reach the Premier League.

United proved to be, arguably, one of the surprise packages of a topsy-turvy Championship season which saw expected runners and riders fall by the wayside with big heavyweights slumped on the ropes and canvas.

Now, BBC Sport has revealed their official pre-season predictions, pooled from 23 pundits, on how they thought the division would play out in 2018/19.

In the end, they weren't too far off the mark with United's efforts, tipping them to have made the play-offs, albeit at the opposite end in sixth place.

Third place was coincidentally predicted to be their play-off vanquishers Derby County, who underachieved on ultimate guesswork.

The BBC ultimately called one top-six contender correctly to their place, tipping West Brom to finish fourth, as well as accurately stating Bolton Wanderers would finish 23rd.

Their biggest faux-pas however included both teams to achieve automatic promotion, Norwich City and Sheffield United, who they tipped to be mid-table stragglers in 11th and 10th respectively.

In addition, they failed to foresee the collapse of favourites Stoke City, ranking them in first place, with the Potters ultimately falling to 16th.

Other interesting calls included tipping seventh-place Middlesbrough to seal a top flight return with a second-place finish and accurately calling all three relegated sides.
