How Kate Garraway's kids are keeping in touch with dad Derek as he comes out of coma

Kate Garraway has told of how her kids are managing to stay in contact with their dad as he remains in intensive care.

Kate recently announced that husband Derek Draper had come out of a deeper coma into a minimum state of consciousness.

Derek was placed in a coma by doctors back in March after being taken into intensive care with coronavirus.

And while his body is now free from the deadly bug, the damage done has been considerable.

But in a recent breakthrough, Derek's been able to open his eyes.

Kids Darcey, 14, and William, ten, are able to speak to their dad thanks to the help of selfless NHS nurses.

Speaking with Hello, Kate told that a nurse holds up an iPad to Derek's bed in intensive care so that the kids are able to stay in touch.

"We're keeping positive and doing everything we can to bring him round," Kate revealed.

She added that he "opens his eyes" sometimes when doctors and nurses greet him.

"We and the doctors are doing everything we can so that he can start to recover," Kate told.

And loving mum Kate is doing all she can to help Darcey and William through the difficult time.

Derek is not verbally responsive, and doctors have warned that Derek could persist in his current state for years.

But they've also advised Kate to get back to her work and not to "put [her] life on pause."

This would provide structure and a greater sense of normality for the kids, she explained.

And while this means she could be heading back to Good Morning Britain some time soon, Kate's "been living at the end of the phone 24/7, waiting for news of Derek."

"My priority is to make the children feel safe," she went on, "Not to let them see me feeling vulnerable in the world where Derek was my rock."
