How Julian Edelman pumped up Rob Gronkowski for crucial TD drive in Super Bowl LIII

Julian Edelman won Super Bowl MVP because of his 10 receptions for 141 yards in the New England Patriots’ 13-3 win over the Los Angeles Rams. But Edelman had unmeasurable contributions, too. The Patriots receiver approached tight end Rob Gronkowski prior to the team’s only touchdown drive, and got him pumped up for the moment.

“Drops a couple F-bombs at me,” Gronkowski said on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon” on Wednesday. “‘Let’s [expletive] go, baby. You’re going to get this catch, Rob. You’re going to make a play for us.’ And I was like, ‘Alright, Jules. I like that. I like that.’ Just football talk in the huddle. And then, you know, a few plays later, I made a couple plays in a row. He’s making plays left and right. He comes right back up to me in the huddle and he just says he always believed in me.”

Showtime’s “Inside the NFL” actually captured a short snippet of that conversation.

Gronkowski finished the game with six receptions for 87 yards, including two catches for 47 yards on the game’s only touchdown drive. His 29-yard catch put the Patriots on the 2-yard line, where running back Sony Michel ran in for a touchdown.
