How Jordan Matthew’s release from the 49ers affects Eagles’ comp picks

There was a surprise in the Bay Area on Saturday when former Eagles draft pick, Jordan Matthews, was cut for a lesser-known wide receiver. Matthews caught three passes for 45 yards in the preseason and was reduced to special teams gunner in his final performance.

The Eagles second-round pick in the 2014 draft, Matthews amassed 225 catches for 2,673 yards and 19 touchdowns during his first three seasons. He returned to the Eagles last season, and after signing with the 49ers in free agency, it was assumed that Matthews would play well enough for the Birds to get a healthy compensatory pick back in exchange.

The Eagles were already expected to receive two compensatory picks in the 2020 NFL Draft after losing both Nick Foles (3rd rd comp pick) and Golden Tate (4th rd comp pick) in free agency. Had Matthews made the 49ers roster and played well, Philadelphia would have landed two more comp picks.

Because he was cut, it basically cancels out the compensation from the Cardinals signing Jordan Hicks to a monster deal.

Matthews being cut will essentially cost the Eagles a fourth-round comp pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.
