How Joe Rodon can keep his place in the starting XI against Chelsea after Tottenham defeat

Joe Rodon got his first minutes of football with Spurs this season when he replaced the injured Eric Dier in the 12th minute against Crystal Palace.

Dier is thought to have suffered a dead leg at Selhurst Park but it doesn't seem to be a serious injury and he will hopefully not be out of action for too long.

The 27-year-old had been Nuno Espirito Santo's first choice in all three of Tottenham's Premier League fixtures before Saturday, but after hobbling off, the Welsh international had to step in.

Rodon had been on the bench for Wales in their 0-0 draw against Estonia after spending the first month of the season injured, but he didn't make an appearance.

Upon his return to north London, Rodon was quickly called in to action from the bench to play alongside Japhet Tanganga, until his sending off, in the 3-0 defeat against Patrick Vieira's side.

The Lilywhites struggled in the final third, having just two shots on goal, to the Eagles' 18 and the team's performance was more than disappointing.

Although the overall performance left a lot to be desired, Rodon was one of only a couple of players to came out with any credit, especially considering his return from injury. The 23-year-old made seven clearances and three accurate long balls during the match.

While it was only a small positive from the match, the ability to come straight into the game and play in a positive manner is part of a trend for the young defender. Last year former Man City defender Andy Hinchcliffe praised the centre-back for both his ability and attitude.

"What I want from a centre-half is someone who loves to defend. Yes, they can play, but they don't just like defending, they really want to defend - they want to get in the line of fire, they want to stop the opposition scoring," he told Sky Sports.

"That's what we see with Rodon. When the ball is there to be won, he wins it."

Thoughts now turn to Thursday's game, where Tottenham travel to France to play Rennes in the Europa Conference League.

When they return, they will have to prepare for a tough fixture against Thomas Tuchel's Chelsea, who haven't yet lost a game this season.

The London derby will see Cristian Romero and Davinson Sanchez as options for the Spurs boss, as they arrive back from their isolation on Saturday.

The defensive duo have been alongside Giovani Lo Celso at a training camp in Croatia, after their international duties took them to red-listed countries.

It's a waiting game to see if the pair get chosen to play in Sunday's fixture, but with Tanganga suspended and the state of Dier's injury not yet known, there is a chance Rodon could be featuring in both matches.

The Welshman will be hoping his performance at the weekend has at least earned him a place in the starting line-up against Rennes and an opportunity to put in an even better performance to be considered for Sunday's game back at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
