How Jean-Philippe Gbamin can use Everton break to his advantage

I know there's no silver lining at all in what's going on right now, but for players like Jean-Philippe Gbamin there's now no point in rushing him back to fitness.

When the season is on, there's always a risk of you pushing yourself that little bit extra in training to try and get back with the team, and maybe going a little bit too far.

Gbamin has come to a new club in a new country and he clearly will want to be involved in it. I've been there before, going to a new club and being forced to sit on the sidelines watching everyone enjoy training and playing the games.

You feel isolated a little bit and it is difficult, the fact that he's come from abroad into a new set of people certainly won't help either. He'll be trying to get his family settled as well.

But, while this lockdown is in place, it will give him time to recover and really just concentrate with the physios on his rehab. Time is what's going to be a real healer for him.

There's no point in him trying to rush back for this season, get him back fresh and fit for the new campaign to begin.

It will be difficult in terms of not having regular one-on-one contact with physios of course, but with modern technology the medical staff can have contact and give him programmes to complete. Hopefully he's being professional and he's doing what needs to be done.

With myself when I was at Rangers, they didn't want me to come and visit the training ground every day throughout the summer when I was injured - which I was willing to do.

Basically, you need a mental break to get away from it. As long as you do it at home and you're still progressing each and every day, that's just a bonus for when you come back in and you're working one-on-one.

He probably won't like it, but I think the logical decision would be to get him ready for next season even if this term does come back in May or June.

Start at the same level as everybody else in pre-season if that timing fits. He'll want to get a few appearances, but there's no point in risking it. He needs to start at a level playing field.

When you're not up to scratch fitness wise, even training can be more difficult that matches - it's faster, sharper and he could pick up little niggles here and there.

This is Gbamin's time to relax mentally and focus on his rehab. Hopefully he can use this to his advantage.
