How is Texans QB Davis Mills stacking up against the rest of the 2021 NFL draft class?

Davis Mills hasn’t been turning heads in the Bayou City. If anything, he might be leading sports fans in the Harris County area to turn their TVs off on Sunday afternoons.

The Houston Texans are 1-6 and amid a six-game losing streak that began with the insertion of Mills into the lineup for an injured Tyrod Taylor, who is battling a strained hamstring. As Mills struggles with his 6.18 yards per pass attempt, so does the Texans offense as they also don’t have a run game to move the ball.

No doubt when compared to Taylor’s lone week of action on Opening Day, or even compared to the past three seasons, the Texans have taken a massive step down at quarterback.

How does it compare to the rest of the quarterbacks from the 2021 NFL draft class? Does Houston really have the worst signal caller from the draft?

Mills’ aforementioned 6.18 yards per pass attempt is the lowest among all six that have started a game: New England’s Mac Jones, Jacksonville’s Trevor Lawrence, New York’s Zach Wilson, Chicago’s Justin Fields, and San Francisco’s Trey Lance.

Counting starts only, Mills is right in the middle in terms of pass attempts with 153. Same goes for his 103 completions.

Mills’ 67.32% completion percentage is the second-highest among the rookies. Jones leads the way at 70.45%.

The rookie from Stanford has the third-lowest yards with 945.

Mills is tied with Wilson for the third-most touchdowns with four. Jones is on top with nine, and Lawrence is second with seven.

Wilson has actually chucked the most interceptions with nine. Despite how horrendous the Buffalo Bills game was in Week 4, Mills is tied with Jones for the third-fewest picks with six.

Jones leads the way with a 92.8 passer rating, which could also be attributed to having a legendary coach and entrenched offensive coordinator guiding him. Mills is second with a 76.3 passer rating.

Mills is tied with Jones for the third-fewest sacks with 14.

It is impossible to know how good or bad Mills actually is. The Texans don’t have a run game to speak of, and the third-rounder is saddled with carrying the offense.
