How is Joliet teacher faring in finals of 'Jeopardy' teachers tourney?

May 12--Joliet teacher Kaberi Chakrabarty is down, but not out on "Jeopardy."

Chakrabarty, who works at Sator Sanchez Elementary School, trails her two competitors in the final round of the quiz show's teachers tournament. The winner, who gets $100,000, will be decided at the end of Friday's episode after the Thursday and Friday scores are added.

Chakrabarty earned $4,600 on Thursday's episode. New Jersey English teacher Jason Sterlacci leads the round with $22,601, while Des Moines English teacher Jill Gilbert placed second with $10,000.

Sterlacci correctly answered the Final Jeopardy clue about Algeria, while Chakrabarty and Gilbert guessed the wrong African countries.

Fifteen teachers began the two-week tournament, which started airing last week. Chakrabarty advanced as a wildcard contestant after placing second on Friday's episode.

Each competitor is set to receive $2,500 for classroom projects. Chakrabarty, who attended Willowbrook High School in Villa Park and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, said she plans to use the grant to buy science experiment kits, musical instruments and math blocks to help her students learn English.

"Jeopardy" airs 3:30 p.m. weekdays on WLS-Ch. 7.
