'How is it even a debate?' - Leeds United fans fume after Liam Cooper's red card vs Man City

VAR has reared its ugly head once again in the Premier League this lunchtime - much to the dismay of the Leeds United fans watching on BT Sport.

Towards the end of first half of their clash against champions elect Manchester City, captain Liam Cooper was shown a straight red card for his challenge on Gabriel Jesus.

Firm and full-blooded, the tackle was deemed excessive enough for the 29-year-old to be dismissed at the Etihad Stadium in the run-up to half-time - following an opener from teammate Stuart Dallas.

However, the decision was not made without VAR intervention - as referee Andre Marriner had to take a second look at his pitchside monitor before giving Cooper his marching orders.

Here is a selection of comments made by Leeds supporters on social media.

@York_White_Rose said: "VAR is absolutely shocking. Please someone explain how Cooper deserved a red card when he won the ball? A yellow yeah, that's fair."

@KrisSmith98 posted: "Outstanding defending and a really well-worked goal, potentially undone by a needless red card from Cooper. Whether or not you agree with the card, it's such a reckless challenge to make in that area of the pitch."

@17LUFC added: "Shocking decision and a lack of consistency among referees in this league. An excellent one-footed challenge receiving a red. A token yellow card in the interests of safe play would have more than sufficed."

@chaz_coleman said: "As if there are people saying it's a red. Jesus rolling around every single challenge, Cooper wins the ball. I don't get how there is even an debate on this?"

@Jake_Harris15 posted: "Feel for Cooper. Old-school, no-nonsense CB. Can't have them in today's game, though, as it's been turned into such a dull and contactless game. It's a red in today's game, but go back 10/15 years, that is considered a great tackle because he got all the ball first."

@JordShepherd said: "Refereeing in this country is pathetic. Baldock two-foots Roberts and he isn't shown a yellow, Cooper wins the ball first and then slightly catches Jesus and it's a red."

@harrrygoodfella1 posted: "We are 1-0 up at half-time against the best team in the league and I'm annoyed because of the red. A defender got the ball in a challenge and got sent-off. The inconsistency needs addressing."

@AaronBurnside added: "The thing is, Cooper had no need to leave the ground and even give the referee a decision to make. Poor defending. The more I see that clip the more I think it was avoidable he didn't need to fly in at all."
