How Ireland could jump to number one in the Rugby World Rankings this weekend - despite not playing a game

Joe Schmidt's Ireland can leapfrog both Wales and New Zealand to become the world's highest ranked side just weeks away from the World Cup - if results go their way this weekend.

Despite not being in action, Irish fans are sure to be keeping a keen eye on affairs both in the Northern and Southern hemisphere across the weekend.

Ireland, currently third in the World Rankings behind Wales and then New Zealand, will be hoping that Wales and England draw and New Zealand fail to win when they face Australia at Eden Park.

With England just behind Ireland in the rankings, the unlikely draw is necessary for the scenario to pan out, while Schmidt's men will hope the All Blacks' dip in form continues after their 47-26 loss to the Wallabies last weekend.

But for now, Irish players will be hard at work at an Algarve training camp as they prepare to face England in Twickenham next Saturday as World Cup warm-ups gather pace.
