How I Met Your Mother: Cobie Smulders' finale defence reignites hatred for ending

Cobie Smulders’ defence of the How I Met Your Mother finale has reignited fans’ hatred of how the sitcom ended.

The show came to an end in 2014 after nine seasons, with fans left disappointed by the reveal that the “mother” referred to in the title had actually died six years before.

Instead, the final episode places focus on Ted Mosby’s (Josh Radnor) relationship with on-off girlfriend Robin Scherbatsky, played by Smulders, despite the fact she had been with Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris) for the majority of the series.

“People are going to feel how they’re going to feel about that, but I think that there’s been enough time,” Smulders said, adding: “I think at the end of the series between Robin and Barney, that was sort of the relationship everyone was rooting for. But when you go back to the very beginning of the show, it was Robin and Ted.

Smulders continued: “Watching it as a streaming show now, you get a little bit more of a connection for other relationships. So, I think that it’s a different way to watch the show now when you see it in its entirety.”

Following her comments, fans of the show were quick to explain why they detested how it ended.

“I love her, but I stand by my choice to ignore the ending as it is,” one person wrote, with another adding: “What ending are you talking about, Cobie?”

“Cobie are you being held hostage, I will rescue you,” one fan tweeted.

One tweeter accused CBS of “staging a fake conclusion” instead of giving us a real proper ending that we fans deserved.”

In February, the sitcom’s co-creator confirmed that a theory about Alyson Hannigan’s character Lily was, in fact, true.
