How I get ready: Pat Cash

I haven’t brushed my hair in 20 years. I have three showers a day when I’m training, but I rarely wash my hair unless it’s sticky and stinky. It’s not quite Rod Stewart or Ronnie Wood levels of messy, but I only spend about three minutes on it. At 49, I’m pleased I’ve still got this much of it.

Most of the time I’m getting ready in a hotel room. As soon as I get there I do the “Pat Cash iron job” which is where you turn the shower on, throw the shirt under the water very quickly, then hang it up in the cupboard to dry overnight. It’s not perfect but it saves me getting the iron out. I’ll have rock music cranking away on my portable speakers – anything from Led Zeppelin to Judas Priest.

For a corporate event I go smart-casual – jeans, shirt and a suit jacket – but always have a bit of rock’n’roll, a cool belt or something. I have worn a cross earring since I was 19, but I lost it on Easter Sunday this year and I haven’t replaced it yet. Maybe I’m too old for it now.

I’m not overly concerned with wrinkles – I’ve got good genes, my mum didn’t have a wrinkle until she was 60. I wear a lot of sun protection when I play tennis, and I’ve started using an amazing night moisturiser. I used to think anti-wrinkle stuff was bullshit, but it works!

I have big legs and a big bum, so it’s a nightmare finding clothes that fit. Now I’m getting older I think I’m getting fat of course, which I’m not really. I’m 6ft and still fit, but I feel short and stocky – I can look like a tree trunk next to tall tennis players.

• Pat Cash will play John McEnroe in the Statoil Masters Tennis at the Royal Albert Hall, London SW7, 3-7 December, statoilmasterstennis.com 020-7070 4404.
