How I get ready: Larry Lamb

I don’t do anything special at all. I only need 10 minutes to jump in the shower. At my age, you don’t have to worry about anything as long as you’re clean. When I was younger, I would take a lot more time and trouble getting myself ready, but that’s because, generally speaking, when you are young man, there is one thing you are going out for. When you get to my age, you’re not going out for that any more.

As an actor, I get made up a lot, and makeup artists often say I’ve got good skin and ask what I use to wash my face. I tell them it is whatever I’ve picked up to wash my hair. And that’s the end of that.

I don’t think about clothes. My son, George, usually says, “Father, you need some new gear, you’re looking drab”, and takes me out shopping. I stand there, he makes me look presentable, and I pay for it.

I worry about my weight the most. I’m very careful about what I eat, and I exercise every morning. I start the stomach crunches while I am still in bed and then get on to the static bike. Now I’m older, I have to. Once you hit 65, you realise you are not immortal, and acknowledging that was very important for me. I had given up drink about a year before that. As you get older, the hangovers get more fierce, so I decided not to waste any more of my life on it. I miss it every now and then, but I’ve tasted wonderful wines and they make you feel just as ill as the dodgy ones.

I always think I could look better, but I am 67 – there’s no point getting hung up about it. I think I look all right for my age and that’s about as good as you can hope for.
