How Harry Maguire's £80m Manchester United move is the latest part of Freddy Shepherd's legacy

The football agency left behind as part of former Newcastle United chairman Freddy Shepherd’s legacy are celebrating another world transfer record after Manchester United’s £80m acquisition of Harry Maguire.

Freddy’s son Kenneth played a key role in the huge deal between Leicester City and the Red Devils.

Former Toon tycoon Shepherd was renowned for a string of marquee signings, including for £17m and Alan Shearer’s £15m world-record transfer to St James’ Park in 1996.

After Shepherd left United following Sir John Hall’s decision to sell to Mike Ashley , he moved into the football agency scene as part of Triple S transfers with son Kenneth and influential agent Paul Stretford.

Shepherd also helped bring stars like Tino Asprilla, Les Ferdinand and David Ginola to the club.

He was part of brave attempts to sign Roberto Baggio, Gazza and Rivaldo.

Three years before Ashley arrived, United also attempted to sign Wayne Rooney from Everton before he joined Man United.

Kenneth, who played a big part in the negotiations for the Maguire deal, said: “Dad’s legacy keeps on growing.

“Not only on transfers but with Soccer Aid’s success this year which has seen the Unicef’s total charity pot rise to over £40m.

“Stars like Tom Hanks, Didier Drogba Usain Bolt, Piers Morgan and Rita Ora all took part this year at Stamford Bridge

“Soccer Aid was started by dad and I and Robbie Williams via the success of The Match at St James’ Park ."

It was actually current Toon boss Steve Bruce who spotted Maguire playing for Sheffield United and agreed a £2.5m fee for his services.

This has now landed Hull a windfall of £9m due to a sell-on clause.

Shepherd wanted Bruce as boss at Newcastle in 2004.

Kenneth said: “Dad would be really pleased to see Steve at the club today.

“He wanted him as manager all those years ago and knew his passion for the club as a Geordie.”
