How Harry Maguire has excelled for Manchester United this season

It is fair to say it has been an up-and-down season for Harry Maguire at Manchester United so far.

The centre-back scored in a 4-1 win over Newcastle United and put in strong displays to help United keep clean sheets against Chelsea and RB Leipzig.

Yet there have also been poor performances in the 6-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur and the recent shock loss to Istanbul Basaksehir.

This inconsistency is also reflected internationally in performances for England.

The 27-year-old endured a nightmare performance against Denmar last month, being sent off after just half an hour, but also scored against Ireland last week to cap a solid display after being named England captain for the game.

Despite his hit-and-miss displays this season, though, there is one area that Maguire has consistently excelled in.

New figures released by the CIES Football Observatory show that the centre-back has won 90 per cent of the aerial defensive duels he has competed in this season.

The data - taken from the 10 best European leagues - shows Maguire's 27 successful defensive aerial duels from 30 attempts is the third-highest percentage in Europe.

Only Chelsea's Kurt Zouma and Atalanta's Berat Djimsiti have a higher percentage than the United star.

Yet both of those players have participated in fewer duels than Maguire, with Zouma winning 26 out of 27 and Djimisti victorious in 22 out of 23.

Maguire is in good company on the list, beating the likes of Raphael Varane and Yerry Mina.

It serves to underline what is pretty common knowledge - Maguire is very good at heading the ball.

Maguire's United teammate, Scott McTominay, said the centre-back serves as a motivator to be better at attacking an aerial ball.

He told United's website: “I was just watching Harry and how many first contacts in the box he gets.

“I was like, well, why can’t I do that? I’m the same size as him. It’s just a little mindset tweak that can really make the difference.”
