Harry Kane wins the Premier League Golden Boot, beating Mohamed Salah by one goal

This season has been one filled with controversy with VAR seemingly the topic for discussion after every matchday.

However, one advantage with VAR is penalties and lots of them.

This season has seen more penalties than any other with a whopping 118 given across the 20 Premier League clubs.

The high volume of penalties awarded this season has made the race for the league's Golden Boot even more exciting with the league's three top scorers all the primary penalty taker for their club.

Harry Kane, Mohamed Salah and Bruno Fernandes make up the league's top three scorers and 19 of the 62 goals scored between them have been penalties this campaign.

Ahead of the final Premier League matchday, it looked to be a straight shootout between the aforementioned Kane and Salah for this season's Golden Boot with both players on 22 league goals.

But a goal in the first half of Spurs' game against Leicester for Kane moved him ahead onto 23 for the campaign, putting him in the driving seat going into the second half.

Latest:

Kane 23 goals

Salah 22 goals

Both forwards have received the award on two separate occasions, Kane picked it up after leading the league in scoring during 2015/16 and 2016/17 while Salah bagged a record-breaking 32 goals in the 2017/18 season before retaining it the following season.

It's fair to say Salah has met a challenge set by Kane in 2018.

"For me it is about doing it year after year," the Spurs striker said. "This is my fourth year now and the first time I have got to 30 goals in the Prem.

"Now it's about getting to 30 goals for the next two or three years – that's the aim.

"Any player wants to do it on a consistent basis and that's what defines a good player from a great player.

"He has done amazing this year and he looks like a great player. We'll see if we can both continue it next season."

Kane's Spurs travel to FA Cup winners Leicester City in a must-win match for the Foxes in their quest for a top-four finish while Salah's Liverpool host Crystal Palace in a match that would likely see the Reds secure Champions League football with a win.

With both of these games crucial in deciding what teams will play in next season's Champions League, we are also set for an exciting final day showdown to decide who takes home this year's Premier League Golden Boot.
