How happy is your neighbourhood? The happiest and most miserable parts of the North East revealed

How happy are you?

It might seem like a strange thing to categorise on a 1-10 scale, but figures release this week by the Office for National Statistics do just that, ranking local authority areas by their levels of happieness.

Locals were asked to rate how happy they were the previous day, as well as about their life satisfaction, their feeling that life is worthwhile, and anxiety levels.

On this measure, North Tyneside is the happiest place in the North East. Search for your area, below.

People in that area gave a rating of 7.7 out of 10 in 2018/19, up from 7.5 in 2017/18.

Across the UK as a whole, there was a slight improvement in average happiness ratings from 7.5 to 7.6, while it was 7.5 for the North East.

People in South Tyneside had the lowest happiness rating locally at 7.4 out of 10.

One in eight people in the area (12%) rated their happiness as low (a score of 0 to 4).

People in Durham gave the highest rating in the North East when asked how satisfied they were with life - 7.8 out of 10.

The UK average was 7.7 out of 10, which was the same for the North East as a whole.

Durham also had the highest score for the degree to which people felt life was worthwhile, at 8.1 out of 10. The lowest score was 7.7 in Newcastle.

This compares to the UK, and North East, average of 7.9 out of 10.

Those in Sunderland were the most anxious, giving an average score of 3.2 for their anxiety levels the previous day.

A quarter (26%) of people in the area rated their anxiety levels as high (a score of between 6 and 10).

The average score for anxiety was 2.9 out of 10 across both the UK and the North East.
