How Grey's Anatomy star Ellen Pompeo wants medical drama to end

It's still going strong after all these years.

Grey's Anatomy is back with season 16 and Ellen Pompeo has returned once more as the popular medical drama's leading lady, Dr Meredith Grey.

The new season sees Meredith coping with potentially losing her medical career after she committed insurance fraud last season, just as her boyfriend Andrew DeLuca professed his love for her and she did so back.

With many stars having departed the cast over the years, from Sandra Oh to Katherine Heigl and Patrick Dempsey , many may wonder how the drama will end when the series finale eventually arrives.

Speaking to The Late Late Show With James Corden , Pompeo revealed her own ideal ending for the series.

Pompeo said: "I'd love to have some of the old cast come back, but that probably won't happen. But that would be the most amazing way to end."

The actress also described an obvious road-block for some returns: "Some of them were killed on the show."

Popular characters to die over the course of the run included Dr George O'Malley (T.R. Knight), Dr Mark Sloan (Eric Dane), Dr Lexie Grey (Chyler Leigh), and Meredith's beloved husband Dr Derek 'McDreamy' Shepherd (Dempsey).

Meanwhile, current showrunner Krista Vernoff has revealed that there are plans to try and lure back an old cast member for a return in season 16.

Sandra Oh left Grey's Anatomy in season 10 (Sky Living)

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight , Vernoff said: "It's an ongoing effort and if I can make it happen, it'll be exciting. And if I can't make it happen, we have other exciting things happening."

Could Killing Eve star Sandra Oh be about to make a comeback as Meredith's 'person' Christina Yang?

Grey's Anatomy returns to Sky Witness and NOW TV in Autumn 2019.
