How good is reported Manchester United transfer target Issa Diop? We asked Football Manager

Manchester United's 2019/20 squad is now starting to take shape, after the signings of Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, but there's more work still to be done.

One player who has been continually linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer is West Ham defender Issa Diop, who is reportedly on United's radar this summer, as they look to strengthen their defensive options.

Diop made 33 Premier League appearances last season, enhancing his reputation with some impressive performances at the heart of the Manuel Pellegrini's defence, after costing the Hammers £22.5 million last summer.

But, how does he compare with United's current defensive options?

Would he improve the side?

We used Football Manager 2019 to find out.

Issa Diop - West Ham

Current ability: 135/200

Potential ability: 138/200

Positions: CB

Best attributes: Jumping reach (17), natural fitness (16), strength (16), tackling (16), heading (16), determination (15).

(Football Manager 2019)

According to Football Manager 2019, Diop is a very good young defender, with some impressive attributes.

His general defensive stats are very strong, with high attributes for tackling, heading, marking, concentration, anticipation, aggression and positioning.

Physically, he's also very strong, with high acceleration, balance, jumping reach, natural fitness, stamina and strength attributes.

However, his technical skills aren't quite at the level you'd expect, with low attributes for passing, vision, technique and first touch.

That's fine if your central defensive partner is good at passing, but what about if he started next to Phil Jones or Chris Smalling? That might be an issue.

Also, Diop's current ability on Football Manager 2019 is only 135 out of 200, to put that into perspective, that's quite a bit lower than Jones (144), Smalling (145) and Eric Bailly (147).

His potential is only 138 out of 200 too, so FM thinks he's almost reached his peak ability.

But, in fairness to Diop, the latest update to the Football Manager database was back at the start of the year, so his profile may be updated by the time the next iteration of the game is released.

Overall, Diop is a young centre-back who has some really good attributes in most areas, but don't expect him to be a ball-playing defender.

Football Manager 2019 suggests that he would be a decent signing for United, but there could be better options out there this summer, particularly for the fee that has been rumoured.
