How Giovanni van Bronckhorst's first Rangers line up could look if new boss gets tough for Sparta Prague

Gio van Bronckhorst had the best seat in the house to get a first look at his new Rangers side.

It's just a pity for the new boss that it made for such uncomfortable viewing.

Sunday's defeat to Hibs not only dumped Rangers out of the Premier Sports Cup, but turned up the spotlight on a squad which has just about done enough to get by so far this season.

Yes, the reigning Premiership champions remain top of the table by four points - that should not be disregarded - but it's clear they can offer more.

Connor Goldson 's post-match accusation of a lack of hunger among his team-mates was confirmation that those on the inside at Rangers have been troubled by what's transpired so far this season.

Van Bronckhorst made clear, in no uncertain terms, at his Monday unveiling that anyone not all-in with leadership will be in for a rude awakening.

“I expect everyone is on board with me," the Dutchman stated.

“It’s my duty to prepare players for games. I prepare them in their attitude, their hunger and their whatever.

“For me, as a coach and player the hunger has to come from within yourself. It starts with that.

“That would make it much easier for me as a coach, but being involved in top football all my life I know what needs to be done to be successful.

“So that message I got across as a coach when I started, and if something or some player thinks otherwise then they will have a tough manager in me.”

With a crucial Europa League clash with Sparta Prague looming at Ibrox on Thursday, Van Bronckhorst may just be tempted to throw down the gauntlet with some major changes to the Rangers side.

The new manager's first line-up is likely somewhere between major surgery and business as usual - but what if he really did dismantle the side that crashed and burned at Hampden?

Jon McLaughlin may just feel he's due a runout in goal for a big game, while Nathan Patterson will almost certainly believe he deserves a chance with James Tavernier 's form dipping.

Calvin Bassey was unlucky not to start over Borna Barisic at Hampden as David McCallum and Brian Gilmour opted for tried and tested in every position.

Were it not for Jack Simpson being excluded from the Europa League squad, Goldson may even have found himself on the outside looking in later this week.

Van Bronckhorst could gamble on the likes of 17-year-old Leon King to really make a statement but there's the distinct possibility that would do neither the team nor the highly-rated - but still very young - defender any favours in a high pressure, top level European fixture.

In midfield, Ryan Jack will be desperate for a start and Van Bronckhorst suggested during his press conference a change of shape to 4-2-3-1 could be on the cards.

Jack could pair Glen Kamara at the base of midfield with Ianis Hagi occupying a number 10 role. Despite a disappointing display against Hibs, Ryan Kent is still working his way back to peak fitness and he's been tried in a central berth before - notably in last season's 4-1 win over Celtic at Ibrox.

Fashion Sakala could then start on the left with Joe Aribo, a consistent performer this season, on the opposite flank.

Alfredo Morelos' lacklustre effort means he could well be destined for a seat on the bench with Kemar Roofe coming back into the side provided he's back from injury in time.
