How Georgia and Auburn stack up: statistical breakdown

This Saturday, the Georgia Bulldogs and Auburn Tigers will write another chapter in the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry when they square off at 3:30 PM in Jordan Hare Stadium.

The Dawgs are coming off an expected trouncing of the Missouri Tigers, 27-0, while Auburn will be fresh off of a bye week.

This game figures to be won in the trenches, as the Dawgs have one of the nation’s best offensive lines and the Tigers have one of the elite defensive lines.

With this in mind, let’s take a look at how the teams stack up statistically.

OFFENSE

SCORING OFFENSE

  • The Dawgs ranked 36th at just over 33 points per game
  • Auburn is right behind, averaging 32.7 points per game

RUSHING OFFENSE

  • Led by D’Andre Swift, UGA is 24th in the nation at 215.89 rushing yards per game
  • Auburn is surprisingly slightly ahead of the Dawgs, ranking 20th and averaging 2019 rushing yards per game

PASSING OFFENSE

  • Led by Jake Fromm, UGA’s aerial attack isn’t quite as potent as its running game, as they average 232.6 passing yards per contest
  • Freshman Bo Nix has led the Tigers to 205.8 passing yards per game, 90th in the nation

TOTAL OFFENSE

  • The Dawgs rank 32nd in the nation with just around 448 yards of offense per game
  • UGA has the significant advantage here, as the Tigers check in at 50th with 425.1 offensive yards per game

  • Georgia ranks 39th in the country in this department with 22.4 first downs per game
  • Auburn is exactly one first down behind the Dawgs, averaging 21.4 per game

PENALTIES

  • The Dawgs are a relatively disciplined team, averaging 55.6 yards from penalties per game, 69th nationally
  • Auburn isn’t as good in this area, ranking 82nd with 59.8 yards from penalties given up

TURNOVER MAGIN

  • Georgia is in the middle of the pack in the turnover department at .22, 50th nationally
  • Auburn ties Georgia in this area, also at .22

  • Auburn is solid in this department, giving up 112.67 rushing yards per game, 21st in the nation

  • Georgia’s passing defense is another one of its strengths, giving up 185 passing yards per game, which is 17th nationally
  • Auburn is not so good here, giving up 221.4 yards per game through the air, all the way down at 59th nationally

  • Not surprisingly, the Dawgs’ are also near the top in total defense, ranking fifth by giving up 260 yards per game
  • Auburn is above average here, ranking 28th with 334.1 yards per game given up

  • This is the one weaker part of the Dawgs’ defense, as they get 2.22 sacks per game, 61st nationally
