How Gary Barlow lost FIVE STONE after pledging to never gain weight again

Gary Barlow has been open and honest about his battles with weight.

He gained five stone after Take That split in 1996 and even described himself as "unrecognisable".

After losing weight, the singer vowed to never put it on again and shared his slimming secrets.

So how did he do it?

In March, last year, Gary launched his own online initiative to help others shift the pounds.

Barlow's Bootcamps aimed to help others slim down and embrace a healthier lifestyle.

Gary handed out advice to his followers telling them to ditch ready-made meals and start cooking healthier options themselves, as well as taking up exercise and minimising sugar intake.

One of the most startling 'before' images of Gary shows him at his heaviest as he poses in the pool on a family holiday.

It's difficult to recognise Gary in the snap, as he sits with his feet in the water with one of his children on his lap.

The 48-year-old said eight years ago that he was finally happy with his weight.

He told Grazia : "I'm at a weight that I'm just so bloody happy with and I feel amazing. I'm full of confidence.

"It's going to sound shallow, but being happy with the way I look makes me spring out of bed in the morning and want to live life."

He also thanked his wife Dawn for supporting him through his weight loss journey.

He said: "I knew she was the one for me because she understands me.

"She has known me through thick and thin. She has known me at 17 stone, when nobody wanted to call me anymore.

"Dawn knows how weight has always been my enemy, how with every mouthful of food I have always felt guilty.

"I've actually had major problems with food for years and years. I realised that once I started to eat I couldn't stop."

The former X Factor judge also opened up about his weight battles last year when he shared a throwback picture of himself, and vowed to never gain weight again.

He said: "These pictures keep me on the straight and narrow. I remember those times and how I felt – awful – I will never allow myself to feel like that again. I’m in control"

Gary weighed 16st 11lb at his heaviest, but slimmed down to less than 12 stone after dieting and working out.

He once opened up to Radio Times about how his weight issues were a form of depression.

He said: "I’d always played music since I was 10 and then I’d gone through this rollercoaster ride of fame and I just couldn’t believe that it was all over and I was only 24."

He's said in the past that he once went six months without leaving the house after gaining weight.

Gary said he realised at one point that the more weight he gained, the less people recognised him, describing the feeling as "fantastic".

He told the Guardian : "The one thing I discovered was that I had put weight on … and a few less people recognised me. The more weight I put on, the more invisible I was and this happened over a two-year period and it was fantastic. By the time I hit 17st 2lbs I was unrecognisable and in heaven because no one recognised me."

Gary said his low feelings came after Robbie Williams quit Take That and the band split.

He said he'd be hurt when people shouted at him in the street asking how Robbie was as the Angels singer enjoyed massive solo success.

Gary tried to write about his issues with weight in a book 15 years ago, but says he was discouraged from including it.

Now though, he's glad he can finally discuss it openly.

He said: "A lot of the things I talk about, we’ve enjoyed and watched women talk about for a long time. We’ve seen the way women have helped one other by talking about it and men haven’t but they are starting to, I feel that tide is turning and it is a good thing, it is a good thing."
