How Gaelic is still very much 'alive and kicking in kids playground'

Councillors have praised the work done to promote the Gaelic language in Perth and Kinross.

A report on the council’s Gaelic Language Plan 2018-2023 was warmly received by councillors.

Highland councillor John Duff wowed the chamber when he voiced his endorsement in Gaelic.

The report highlighted Perth and Kinross Council’ s active promotion of Gaelic services and events, the delivery of Gaelic education from nursery right through to adult education, supporting Gaelic language skills, training for council staff and promoting Gaelic as part of the area’s heritage.

Conservative councillor John Duff said: “The council’s Gaelic Plan demonstrates its significant commitment to the language, traditions, music and culture of Gaelic.

The signs have been criticised in the past for giving too much prominence to the Gaelic interpretation (edwin lawrence)

“As a language, Gaelic is experiencing a resurgence and parents are recognising the benefits of a Gaelic Medium Education for their children.

“As a Gaelic speaker, I welcome the council’s support for the language, particularly as we approach Perth’s hosting of the Royal National Mod in 2021.”

SNP Perth City North councillors John Rebbeck and Dave Doogan commended the Gaelic education being provided at Goodlyburn Primary in their ward.

Cllr Rebbeck said:  “Gaelic is alive and kicking and it’s great to hear the kids in the playground talking in the native language.”
