How former Nottingham College campus in Clifton could be redeveloped

Housing association bosses have applied to start the planning process to transform a former Nottingham College site in Clifton.

Talks are under way between Nottingham Community Housing Association and the college over the sale of a 19-acre plot in Farnborough Road.

The association has tabled a scoping request, ahead of a planning application being submitted, providing details of how the land could potentially be redeveloped.

The initial documents reveal the site is earmarked to become the association's headquarters, employing up to 400 members of staff.

The majority of the former College buildings could also be replaced with a block of more than 40 flats part of the thinking.

New bungalows could also be in the pipeline.

A spokeswoman for the housing association said: "Nottingham Community Housing are currently in discussions with New College Nottingham regarding the purchase of the former Clifton College site on Farnborough Road, Clifton.

"Full planning documentation will be published in due course, and will state that the existing playing fields, artificial football pitch and changing rooms will be retained and will be on offer for use by the wider community when the project is complete.”

The scoping request was submitted by Landmark Planning on behalf of the association.

"I am of the opinion that the proposed development is highly unlikely to result in any significant environmental effects," a document, submitted as part of the application, states.

"The application’s key planning considerations can be properly assessed by specialist technical reports and, therefore, the production of an environmental statement is not required."

According to the documents, submitted to Nottingham City Council, an existing single-storey building could be retained and refurbished for use as a call centre.

The former Farnborough Road campus, and two other sites, were placed on the market last year.

The sales of these buildings follows the merger of Central College and New College Nottingham back in June in 2017.

A spokesman for Nottingham College added: "The College can confirm it is in negotiations over the sale of our former Clifton campus.

"The Clifton site required significant investment and was identified for disposal as part of the College's estate rationalisation programme which included construction of the new City Hub campus.

"The College wants all of our students to learn in the best facilities possible, improving their experience and chances of success and offering them the opportunity to be part of a bigger and more vibrant student community."

Meanwhile, the city council is inviting public discussion on how to enhance the gateway from the Broadmarsh area of Nottingham city centre to Nottingham Castle.

The College site in Maid Marian Way could be revamped, with staff and students set to relocate to its £58m new city campus in Canal Street.
