How Fitzy crashed ScoMo's big party

A former Newcastle Herald journalist was doing a search in the newspaper's photo archive when he came across some old election classics.

"If you search photos for 'Scott Morrison and Singleton', you get a flashback to that time in 2013 when Fitzy chased ScoMo around the Hunter with a 'Look At Moi trailer' to try to photobomb his presser."

Joel Fitzgibbbon parked his trailer outside the Singleton Tourist Information Centre, where then Coalition immigration spokesman Scott Morrison had planned to hold a press conference about refugee housing at Singleton army base.

When ScoMo got wind that Fitzy had crashed the party, he moved the conference to Singleton Council chambers.

"If it turns out the Prime Minister has no commuter car parks to announce in Singleton this election campaign, at least the Upper Hunter city will always have memories of ScoMo's 2013 visit to treasure," the former journo quipped.

The good old Rudd-Gillard-Rudd Labor government had been in power before the election, a time known for knives in backs, the carbon tax and the misogyny speech.

History shows that the Abbott government won power at the election and ScoMo - AKA Scotty from Marketing - became immigration minister.

What do you mean you don't remember?! Don't feel bad. The Turnbull-ScoMo shuffle, Black Lives Matter, a pandemic and Russian invasion have since taken over the zeitgeist and our collective memory.

By the way, the Nationals bloke that ScoMo ended up in a happy snap with in Singleton seems kinda familiar, too.

The Memory Bank

This from David Stuart, of New Lambton: Back in the 1950s when I was a young blade in Merewether, there was an attractive young girl named Roberta who lived near the beach and naturally caught my eye.

However, her eye was caught by Don Fraser, a first grade hockey fullback for Western Suburbs.

At that time, I was playing centre forward for South Newcastle and we were both selected for the NSW under-21 side for the Australian championships in Victoria in 1960. [They won the title, just quietly]

Meeting at the Newcastle Railway Station for the trip, Roberta was there to see Don off and I don't think I have seen her since. I believe Don and Roberta have already celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

Although I haven't caught up with them personally, I have noticed some of Don's letters in the Newcastle Herald over the years.

He didn't seem to have a sense of humour when he was hitting a hockey ball at me, but his contributions to the paper are not only hard hitting but quite amusing.

I noticed we both had letters published in the Herald [on the same day], one following the other. They were both referring to the late Labor politician, Kimberley Kitching. It's amazing how the vault in the memory bank can be unlocked by a minor coincidence.
