How family of man found dead in river are being helped by loved ones and strangers

Strangers and loved ones of a man who was found dead in a river have come together to help his family.

Peter Francis Curry's body was discovered in the River Alt, near Melling, on Friday morning shortly before police closed multiple roads in the area.

The 55-year-old, from Kirkby, was missing for two weeks before his body was found, after a row broke out following a family Sunday dinner.

Peter's worried family launched a tireless appeal in the hope of finding him but he tragically died.

Now, after hundreds of tributes were posted to him and his family, kind strangers and loved ones have come together to support Peter's close relatives.

A JustGiving page was set up by Peter's niece Kerry Levey in order to help Peter's family pay for his funeral.

On the page, Kerry said: "My uncle peter has been missing for the past two weeks and we have found out today he's no longer with us.

"We have set this page up to try help my auntie out with funeral costs and to help her out as much as I can.

"I hope family and friends could donate please to take the worry off her mind x"

A fundraising target of £500 has been placed on the page and so far generous donors have raised over £130.

Many people posted a tribute with their donation.

Lesley Carroll said: "So sorry and it’s only small amount but all adds up and all donations will help at this sad time."

Brian Merritt also said: "God bless all your family. We watched hoped and prayed he would be found safe and sound. X"

Speaking about her father after he went missing, Charlene Darwin told the ECHO:

"Peter's the nicest person ever, he'd do anything for anyone.

"On the Sunday, I sat him down, told him to look me in the eye and tell me what was going on. I was asking if he was depressed.

"He said he wasn't. We're all feeling terrible, I can't sleep or relax at the moment.

"I've not been able to go to work. He's a lovely man. It's tough.., my mum's not been able to eat properly."
