How Family-Friendly ESPN Will Handle Profanity on ‘The Pat McAfee Show’

On Thursday, The Pat McAfee Show will make its debut on the ESPN family of networks, officially making the move from FanDuel. McAfee’s daily show will air from noon through 2:00 p.m. ET, with the third hour airing only on YouTube and ESPN+.

However, the change in networks will also require limitations in the way McAfee and his crew will be aired. According to Isabella Simonetti of The Wall Street Journal, ESPN is airing The Pat McAfee Show on a delay, which will allow the network to mute every time someone on the show curses.

McAfee is known for not having a filter when broadcasting his show, which is what makes his partnership with ESPN so fascinating. The Disney-owned network generally seeks to keep its shows as family-friendly as possible.

The compromise for this issue appears to be airing the show on delay by at least a few seconds, which allows McAfee to keep his unique personality alive in his show. McAfee has experience working on ESPN as an analyst on College Gameday, but his free-flying personality is a significant draw for his show.

“Most of us come from blue-collar towns who speak in a certain way—so I didn’t want to lose all of our swear words,” McAfee said, via Simonetti.

McAfee’s reportedly signed a five-year deal worth $85 million with ESPN, which includes the former punter’s weekly appearance on College Gameday.
