How ex-Giants fared in Week 4 of XFL season

The XFL officially wrapped up Week 4 over the weekend and to their credit, some of the play on the field is getting better and the games more entertaining.

Of course, their sideline interviews and unique rule changes help propel the league forward, but that’s not all there is to enjoy at this point.

But that’s not what you’re here for anyway, so let’s skip the commentary and move onto how former members of the New York Giants fared this past week.

Former Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride and his staff, including a few other ex-Giants, picked up their second win of the season after benching quarterback Matt McGloin in favor of Luis Perez.

Offensive lineman Damien Mama and Jarron Jones both played and didn’t call attention to themselves, so that’s usually a good sign for the hog mollies. Mama also celebrated with the fans after the victory, which is a unique aspect of the league.

Tight end Jake Powell hauled in three receptions on four targets for a team-leading 34 yards.

Meanwhile, for the Wildcats, quarterback Josh Johnson had another huge week, completing 25 of his 40 pass attempts 330 yards, two touchdowns, one interceptions and a 94.8 QB rating.

Defensively, edge rusher Devin Taylor recorded three tackles (two for a loss), two QB hits, 1.5 sacks and one pass defensed.

St. Louis BattleHawks 23, Seattle Dragons 16

Offensive tackle Matt McCants started at tackle despite dealing with an injury leading up to the game, while wide receiver Alonzo Russell hauled in just one pass for seven yards.

Fellow wide receiver L’Damian Washington caught four passes on six targets for 41 yards.

There was no return for a touchdown this week courtesy of Joe Powell, but former Giants safety Will Hill had himself a game, recording two tackles, one pass defensed and the game-sealing interception, which earned him the game ball.

For Seattle, defensive end Stansly Maponga recorded five tackles (one for a loss).

Houston Roughnecks 27, Dallas Renegades 20

Quarterback Eric Dungey was out on Sunday, mourning the loss of his father. However, after Landry Jones struggled and tossed three picks, it’s possible Dungey earns the start in Week 5.

Running back Austin Walter did not factor in offensively, but he did serve as a return man, opening the second half with a 22-yard return.

Defensively, safety Tenny Adewusi checked in with four tackles.

For Houston, running back Andre Williams gained 18 yards on two carries, adding two receptions for 12 yards.

Meanwhile, cornerback Charles James didn’t show up in the box score, but he certainly showed up during sideline interviews, dropping an f-bomb as he gave a little grief to Landry for those three interceptions.

Punter Austin Rehkow had an up-and-down day.

Tampa Bay Vipers 25, D.C. Defenders 0

Defenders running back Jhurell Pressley led the way on an ugly day for the team, gaining 34 yards on seven attempts (4.9 ypc), adding three receptions for a team-high 32 yards.

Center James O’Hagan did not play after previously landing on IR, while Malcolm Bunche returned from injury and drew the start at tackle.

Defensive tackle Jay Bromley recorded four tackles and one QB hit, while safety Rahim Moore recorded three tackles, one QB hit, one pass defensed and one interception.

For the Vipers, wide receiver Stacy Coley did not factor in, but tight end Colin Thompson did snag one reception for 13 yards.

On the other side of the ball, defensive tackle Josh Banks record one tackle, while do-it-all man Nikita Whitlock recorded two tackles.
