How England team use WhatsApp – and how it's brought players closer together

Manchester United and Man City's top stars may be away for the international break but there will still be football on this weekend with the Three Lions set to play.

England take on Andorra on Saturday and then face fellow Group I rivals Hungary at Wembley on Tuesday hoping to extend their four-point cushion at the top of Group I.

With just four games left to play in the Qatar 2022 World Cup qualifiers, England will be hoping they can follow up their 4-0 wins over Hungary and Andorra and 1-1 draw with Poland in September by putting more points on the board.

The international squad have spent a month apart following those results last month, although that doesn't mean they've been out of touch with one another.

The Times reported in August 2017 that the players set up a WhatsApp group to improve their togetherness, which manager Gareth Southgate quickly took on as something which needed improving within the squad when he took the job in 2016.

The messaging group was reportedly set up by the FA to inform players of the national team's schedules but has now turned into a platform for players to discuss things while at their clubs.

And Mason Mount has spoken publicly about how the group has brought the players closer together.

“We go back to our clubs and we’re all going to be playing against each other, but we have a WhatsApp group, so we’re always talking to each other,” said Mount following England's 4-0 win over Kosovo in November 2019. “It shows how close we are. It’s like a family. We always keep in contact.

“You obviously see what everyone else is doing within the Premier League at their clubs. It’s going to get heated in club games because they’re massive games, but we’re very tight as a group."

Tammy Abraham and Ben Chilwell were this week added to Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Hungary.

Roma striker Abraham has been out of the Three Lions’ fold since November 2020, while Chilwell, who made his first Premier League appearance of the season on Saturday, has replaced injured Chelsea team-mate Reece James.

The Football Association said in a statement: “Ben Chilwell and Tammy Abraham have been added to the England squad for the forthcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

“All players will report to St George’s Park on Tuesday apart from Reece James, who is ruled out through injury.”
